The Ord River scheme began in 1959 and the town of Kununurra was established to service the agricultural area with housing, offices, water supply, a power plant and an air strip. In 1971 the Argyl Dam (Lake Argyle) was completed upstream of Lake Kununurra and had the capacity to maintain the water level in lake Kununurra at a constant level in order to gravity feed the M1 channel all year around.
The pump station was maintained for emergency back-up until 2004 when it as disconnected and is now on the Western Australia Heritage Register.

It is now a typical pub style bar and restaurant overlooking Lake Kununurra where you may see the occasional crocodile floating by.
