4WD Drive near Wyndham – Around Kununurra, there are plenty of places you can visit in 2WD. However, if you rent a 4WD car, there are more places you can go.
King River Road and Parry Creek Road near Wyndham are two short 4WD drives I would like to recommend. From Kununurra to Wyndham is an easy 100km drive on the well maintained sealed roads. Adding two short 4WD drives to your visit to Wyndham & Grotto will make a fun day out in the outback.
Drive King River Road to admire the Aboriginal cave paintings
At the edge of Wyndham township, turn onto the King River Road. Drive approx 20km, then you will reach Moochalabra Dam. The dam itself is nothing special, but the area around here has real outback feel.

Also at nearby cliff, you can see some Aboriginal cave paintings.

We also spotted some beautiful Brolgas (large crane with red head) here.

Drive Parry Creek Road to Telegraph Hill & Parry Lagoon Natural Reserve
About 15km south of Wyndham township on Great Northern Highway, turn onto unsealed Parry Creek Road. Drrive approx 6km, and you will reach the Telegraph Hill, where you can see the remaining foundation of the historic telegraph station used during World War I and II.

From the Telegraph Hill, you can enjoy the uninterrupted view of the surrounding outback and the huge wetland area called Parry Lagoon Natural Reserve.

The contrast of the dry outback and the green wetland is so beautiful!
After you enjoyed the view from the Telegraph Hill, keep driving on the unsealed Parry Creek Road further down towards the wetland.

Soon, you will arrive the Marlgu Billabong, where you can enjoy watching birds (and huge estuary crocodiles too!!) from the bird hide and boardwalk.

There are thousands of birds flying in the sky, and it’s so peaceful here!

4WD Driving in Outback
Unsealed road conditions change constantly, so you must drive to the condition and drive carefully. Also, each rental car company has its own rules where you can/cannot drive. Read your rental agreement and understand what you can/cannot do.
