WYNDHAM & GROTTO

Western Australia
Western Australia

Easy Day Trip from Kununurra – One of the easier day trips out of Kununurra is to visit Wyndham & Grotto. Wyndham is a small town located 100km northwest of Kununurra, and the Grotto is a deep gorge which is situated 36km south of Wyndam. Both Wyndham and the Grotto can be reached via sealed roads, so can be reached with 2WD car.

Wyndham

Wyndham is the most northerly town in Western Australia. The town sits where the five rivers (King, Pentecost, Durack, Forest and Ord Rivers) meet and flow into the Cambridge Gulf.

Just beside this small township, the craggy Bastion Range rises 330m above sea level. A sealed road (Hugo Austia Drive) leads from the town to the Bastion Range, and an easy 5 minutes drive will take you to the Five Rivers Lookout, where you can enjoy the panoramic views over the gulf, rivers, and the outback.

There is nothing much to see in the town, but the scenery from this lookout is so specutacular that it’s worth the drive.

Grotto

The Grotto is a deep gorge with a waterhole, which is a popular place to visit on the way to Wyndham. Just 35km south of Wyndham on the Great Northern Highway, turn onto the sealed Grotto Road, and soon you will reach the Grotto site.

You are now standing on the top of the gorge, and you have to walk 140 steps down to reach the waterhole.

After you reach the bottom of the gorge, it’s a short walk to the waterhole. Walking through the rugged gorge is very fun.

It’s a very secluded waterhole. You can swim, or just appreciate its serenity.

During the wet season, the waterfall drops from the surrounded high cliff into the waterhole, which must be spectacular.

If you’ve got a 4WD car …

Wyndham and the Grott can be easily visited with 2WD cars, however, if you’ve got a 4WD car, there are few other places you can visit near Wyndham.
