BROOME

HISTORIC PEARLING TOWN INTHE KIMBERLY’S

Broome is a historic coastal pearling and tourist town in the Kimberly region of Western Australia. It is located 2,046 km north from Perth and with a population over 14,000 is the largest town in the Kimberly region. The Kimberly is a vast region and the northernmost region of Western Australia, bordered by the Indian ocean to the west and the north by the Timor Sea. To the south are the Great Sandy and Tanami deserts in the region known as the Pilbara. To its east is the Northern Territory. It is a vast unpopulated area with magnificent outback Australian scenery.

WHY GO THERE?

There are many reasons to visit this beautiful outback town.

• Broom boats some of the world’s most stunning beaches, which combined with the warm tropical climate provides the perfect opportunity to stroll the coastline, sunbathe and swim in clear turquoise water with pristine white sand and stretches of remarkable red cliffs.
• Roebuck Bay, Staircase to the Moon, a natural phenomenon that can only be seen in a few places in the world.it occurs in Roebuck Bay from March to October, when at low tide and the mudflats are exposed the light from full moon hits the mud flats it creates an illusion of stairs stretching to the moon.
• Experience Broome’s rich pearling history, one of the famous pearling industry locations in the world.
• Feel the cultural diversity and history of Broome which thanks to the pearling industry, home to Chinese, Malaysians, Indonesians, Japanese and Pilipino. Stroll the streets of Broome with its historic buildings and visit the Japanese cemetery, the largest outside of Japan and soak up the history since the late nineteenth century. Visit to markets and shops with diverse offerings.
• Take in the sights and enjoy the wildlife of the beautiful Kimberly. Find dinosaur prints along the Dinosaur Coast, take a day trip to the ‘Horizontal Falls” o0r just drive into the desert and experience the wonderful and beautiful Australian outback.in the process, see dolphins, whales’ kangaroos and crocodiles.

Qantas ,Virgin and Jetstar service Broome from Melbourne, Sydney and Pert. There are also flights from Darwin.

西オーストラリア州のブルーム (Broome) に行ってきました。

西オーストラリア州の北部にあるブルームは、美しいビーチと真珠の養殖で有名なところ。

オーストラリアの秘境キンバリー地区の西側、広大な未開の地の中にぽつんとあるリゾート地です。

クイーンズランド州のビーチリゾートのような華やかさはありませんが、ターコイズブルーに輝くインド洋とビーチの美しさは格別です。

特に、ブルームの街の西にあるケーブルビーチ (Cable Beach) は、インド洋に面していて、ホントに美しい。。。

一方、ブルームの街は、インド洋から入りこんだローバック湾 (Roebuck Bay) に面していて、このローバック湾側の海にはマングローブが茂っています。

絵の具を溶かしたような、なんとも不思議な色でしょ。

このローバック湾側のタウンビーチからは、3月から10月までの毎月3日間だけ、Staircase to the Moon という、月が海に反射して海から月へ階段が繋がっているように見える、という現象を見ることができます。

残念ながら、私たちが滞在していた日は、Staircase to the Moon の日ではありませんでしたが。。。

ブルームの街には、ブルーム周辺で真珠の養殖が始まった1880年代以降第二次世界大戦までの間、真珠貝を採取するダイバーとして日本から移住してきた多くの日本人が住んでいたんだそう。

当時はブルームの街に日本人街もあったそうで、今でもブルームの街には日本語の名前のついた通りがあったり、Shinju Matsuri (真珠祭り) というフェスティバルが行われていたり、日本人の銅像が建っていたりします。

残念ながら、そこまで古い建物は残ってはいないのですが、こんな建物がありました。

20世紀初めに建てられた屋外映画館。

現在でも使われている屋外映画館としては世界で一番古いものなんだそう。

そして、ブルームの街外れには、真珠貝採取のために日本から移住してきた日本人の墓地があります。　真珠貝採取の仕事は過酷な仕事で、多くの人が潜水病で亡くなったり行方不明になったりしたんだそう。　この日本人墓地には900人以上の日本人が葬られています。

この日本人墓地を訪れてびっくりしたのは、和歌山県の東牟婁郡や西牟婁郡出身の人のお墓がものすごく多いこと。。。　実は、和歌山県東牟婁郡は私の両親が定年後に移り住んだところなんです。　見慣れた地名が刻まれたお墓があまりにたくさんあるので、ちょっとびっくりしてしまいました。

1880年代というと、明治時代の中ごろ。　江戸幕府の鎖国が終わってからわずか20年そこらで海外に移住するって、ものすごい決断ですよね。

ブルームには、この他にも景色の良いスポットがいくつもあります。

こちらは、ブルームの港がある、Entrance Point という岬。

港の長～い桟橋では、釣りをしてる人がいっぱい。　ものすごく大きな魚 (golden travally) を釣り上げてる人もいましたよ！

そしてこちらは、インド洋に面した Gantheaume Point という岬。

オレンジ色の崖とターコイズブルーの海のコントラストがとっても美しい。

干潮時には、岩に残っている恐竜の足跡も見れるんだそう。

恐竜の足跡を見つけるぞ～と意気込んで、干潮時に行ってみたのですが、目印などがまったくないので、見つけることはできませんでしたが。。。

そして、この Gantheaume Point からインド洋沿いに北へとずっと続いているのが、ケーブルビーチです。
