KUNUNURRA – Mirima National Park

Western Australia
Western Australia

Mirima National Park
is a national park adjacent to the town of Kununurra.

It is a small national park, but spectacular. It features beehive-like rock formations similar to Bungle Bungle, hence it is often called “Mini Bungle Bungle“.

Mirima National Park has several easy walking trails.

Banan Derdbe-Gerring Gooleng Theniyinhang Trail (Looking at Plants Trail) is a flat 0.5km loop trail, and most part of this trail is boardwalk-style, making it easy for anyone to walk.

As the trail name “Looking at Plants Trail” suggests, there are trailside signs about the plants unique to the Kimberley region, such as kapok and boab trees.

Then, further beyond the Looking at Plants Trail, there is a Derbde-Gerring Banan Trail (For Looking Out Trail).

Derbde-Gerring Banan Trail (For Looking Out Trail)

This trail involves climbing stairs and walking on some rocky areas, however, the walking distance is only 800 meters return. So it is not that difficult to walk.

Once you reach the top of the rocks, you can enjoy a spectacular view.

Another trail I like is Demboong Banan Trail (Gap Trail).

It is also a very short trail, only 500 meters return walk from the parking lot.

Demboong Banan Trail (Gap Trail)

You walk through a valley surrounded by rocky mountain ranges, which makes you feel you are really in the wilderness.

And at the end of the trail, you will reach the lookout, where you can overlook Kununurra town through the mountain gap.

There is also Gerliwany-Gerring Bana Trail, which is a 2.2km very gentle stroll from the national park entrance to the parking lot.

As I am updating this post, I have just realised that they had opened another 3.5km trail called Yoorrnging Geranyem Banan Trail, which is a challanging Class 5 trail. I can not wait to walk this trail next time when I visit Kununurra !

As I mentioned before, Mirima National Park is a small national park, but don’t be fooled by the size. It is a beautiful spot. Since it is right next to the town of Kununurra, you can come here for a morning or evening stroll. There are also picnic tables at the parking lots where the trails start, and you can enjoy picnic here too.

You will love it!
