The Stanley Hotel is a historic hotel that has been continually operating since 1847. Built by John Whitbread, who was sent to Van Dieman’s land at age 15 for poaching rabbits in England in 1828.Padoned for good behaviours he settled in Stanley and built the hotel he called ‘The Emily” in 1847 and it has continually operated since then as The Emily, Freemanson’s, The Union and now The Stanley Hotel. It has a central position in the quaint historical town of Stanley and fits in well with the character of the place. It is a typical country pub with accommodation upstairs and a bistro downstairs which includes an open deck area.

With few other options in Stanley, it does a brisk trade serving typical pub favourites “the country pub way” and claims to use local ingredients which should be abundant both from the land and the sea. Neither the food or the service is refined but expect a hearty pub meal with friend country style service with atmosphere that matches the town.

Stanley Hotel also provides accommodations. Rooms are comfortable, and reasonably priced.
